It Is Well
I recorded my first album back in 2005 while I was a senior at Belmont University. At the last minute, I decided to add my favorite hymn as an epilogue to the album. A few friends got together, and we went over to Chris Rice’s house. Gathered around the piano in his living room, we recorded Horatio Spafford’s 1873 classic, “It Is Well with My Soul.”
It’s a messy recording if you listen closely, but I love it… and over a decade later it endures as the most “successful” recording of my career (you can still find this song on YouTube as the background music for a video about Horatio Spafford’s life that has been viewed well over two million times). Becca and I essentially covered this version of the song on our HYMNS EP a couple of years ago, but the original seems to have some magic in it.
When Becca recently created a painting inspired by this hymn, I went back and listened to my old version. It made me smile.
So in honor of something old that still brings me great joy, I’m pleased to announce the re-release of my 2005 version of “It is Well with My Soul,” compete with incredible new artwork from Becca Wildsmith.
